Frequently Asked Questions
I am
getting error 500: Internal Server Error when I try to run the scripts
Chances are you haven't
followed the installation instructions carefully enough. Make sure that
you uploaded all the files as ASCII, not binary. Make sure the perl path
in the first line of the scripts is correct for your system. Make
sure that you have set all the permissions correctly as described in the
readme.txt file. Finally, you MUST run the System Settings script and get all the system variables set up before anything
else will work. If your data path is incorrect in System Settings, then
the scripts will not work.
Everything
looks fine except the images aren't appearing and I'm getting a broken
image on the pages I'm trying to count
Check (of course) that you
have uploaded the images as binary files and set the permissions
correctly. If that is all OK, then you have made a mistake in one or
more of the paths / URLs in System Settings. Right click on one of the
broken images and check under Properties to see the URL of the image
that the script is trying to display. It is likely that this will not be
the URL you are expecting to see. Sometimes putting a / after your Root URL in System Settings helps.
I am
getting an error saying it can't find the file statsfile.log
Statsfile.log is
automatically created the first time a hit is registered on one of the
pages you are tracking. You must therefore enter the javascript onto one
of your pages, and then visit it, before the script a1disp.cgi will work
properly.
I am
getting weird pages included in my stats which are nothing to do
with my site
The javascript records the URL that has been visited ever time that
your page appears. Some sites such as safeweb.com (security) and
babel.com (language translation) use their own software to display your
page embedded within their own site. Thus the URL that is recorded is
not yours, even though it is your page that has been displayed.
These stats can be useful or irritating depending on your point of
view. Ultimately they do reflect hits to your site. In the case of
safeweb.com it might suggest
that a fair amount of your visitors are concerned about site security. If
you get a lot of links from translation services it relects interest
from non-English
speaking visitors (perhaps you should think about translating your own
pages).
